Voor Freiburg, dat als zevende eindigde in de Bundesliga, wordt het de eerste Europese finale uit de clubgeschiedenis. Aston Villa staat daarentegen voor de derde keer in een Europese eindstrijd. De huidige nummer 4 van de Premier League kende zijn grootste Europese successen in 1982.
Dat jaar won Aston Villa in De Kuip in Rotterdam met 1-0 van FC Barcelona in de finale van de Europacup I, de voorloper van de huidige Champions League. Later datzelfde jaar veroverde de club ook de Europese Supercup. Die werd destijds over twee wedstrijden gespeeld en opnieuw was Barcelona de tegenstander.
